Students Participate in Book Award Program

Dillon School District Four was well represented as students from South Elementary, Stewart Heights Elementary, Gordon Elementary and J.V. Martin Junior High participated in the 2009 book awards sponsored by the South Carolina Association of School Librarians. The awards were begun in 1976 to encourage students to read good quality contemporary literature and to honor the authors of the books chosen the favorites by student vote.

Each year twenty books are nominated in each of three categories: Picture Books, Children’s Books, and Junior Books. Media specialists, teachers, and other instructors at schools across the state encourage students to read the nominated books. Dillon students who qualified to cast a vote by reading the required number of books were recognized by being invited to an election sponsored by their school library media specialists.
