South and Stewart Heights Awarded a $1.8 Million

South and Stewart Heights Elementary Awarded a $1.8 Million-Dollar Grant

South and Stewart Heights Elementary schools in Dillon School District 2 were awarded a Reading First Grant.  The grant is for a three year period in the amount of $1.8 million dollars.  At the end of the three-year cycle, two additional years may be awarded.  There were forty-nine eligible districts in the state for the grant and twenty-four district proposals have been approved for funding for participation in the South Carolina Reading First Initiative.

The district plans to establish a research-based program in both schools for all K-3 students based on the Reading First guidelines.  The district will focus on providing significantly increased professional development to ensure that all teachers have the skills needed to teach reading successfully.  In addition, teachers will be trained to effectively screen, identify and assist students in overcoming reading barriers that face them.  The district’s goal is that all students will be proficient readers by the end of the third grade.

If you have any questions about the grant you may contact Lynn Liebenrood, Project Director, or the following school principals: Peggy Stafford, South Elementary and Jayne Lee, Stewart Heights Elementary.
