Scholastic Reading Counts!

Scholastic Reading Inventory

What is RC (Scholastic Reading Counts)? What is SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory)?

Reading Counts is a reading quiz program for students and a management system for teachers. By providing reading comprehension quizzes, it can be used by schools to develop activities that motivate students to read.

Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) is a reading comprehension test for grades 1-12 that assesses students' reading levels and helps teachers adjust instruction according to students' needs, track students' reading growth over time, and match readers to text.

How many quizzes and books are available? What is a "lexile"?

Students and parents may look for Reading Counts books in the Destiny Online catalog. Quizzes for all books in the Reading Counts program are available at all schools.

The Lexile Framework is a reading measure that matches students to text. The Lexile Framework places both reader and text on the same scale. SRI assigns a Lexile number to test results and provides a list of books that match the student's interests and reading level.

Why are students getting points for taking Reading Counts quizzes? How was this individualized reading list in SRI developed?

Some schools may use points to motivate students to read or provide extra credit.

A student chooses from a list of  many categories. There are a variety of categories such as Friends and Family, Space and Beyond, Animals, Humor, and others. After a student completes the test, a list is generated by searching over 24,000 titles and lists books based upon the interests and reading level of the student. A silver "disk" or a "pencil" is pictured next to titles for which  a Reading Counts quiz that is available in the library media center at their school.  They may also use this list to look in the Destiny Online Catalog to see if any of these titles are available in the school media center.

Does the number of points earned by a student affect his or her grade?

No. Students cannot fail for not taking a Reading Counts quiz. Please see the Dillon School District Four Reading Counts Guidelines.

Is my child required to read only books of a designated lexile?

Students can read any books they would like… but if they are choosing books that are too easy, they may be encouraged to read more challenging books in order to improve their reading skills.

How many quizzes may a student take in one day?

Individual schools make this determination.
