Reading Coaches Information

The SC Department of Education will host a Literacy Leaders Institute for professional development.  Reading Coaches have three years earn to earn a literacy add-on endorsement.

Reading Coach will NOT:

• be assigned a regular classroom teaching assignment;
• perform administrative functions that will confuse their roles as teachers;
• work with students in small groups;
• devote a significant portion of his/her time to administering or coordinating                          assessments; nor observe teachers for formal evaluation purposes.

Principals will also attend SCDE professional development as it relates to the roles and responsibilities of the Reading Coach.

Schools which receive the services of a coach and have 20 percent or greater of their students scoring Not Met under reading and research are also eligible to receive additional funding.  The additional funding must be used to support professional development opportunities for the literacy add-on endorsement.
